Prior to any instruction, the tutor administers a brief series of questions, either written or oral, to assess the student’s knowledge and understanding of the skills and concepts required in the module or unit of study.
The pre-test is used to determine whether learners have already mastered some or all of the skills that match the program of studies for that particular topic. If they have, then they do not need as much instruction, if any, for those skills. If it is obvious that they lack necessary skills, the instruction can focus on those skills. When using a pre-test in this manner, a teacher is not trying to grade a student; he or she is simply trying to determine where instruction should start. At this point, the tutor outlines the first step of the instructional action plan, including the skills and objectives that the student needs to master. This instructional plan is unique for each student.
